Which 5-Star Edinburgh Hotels are on Princes Street

The Balmoral and The Caledonian Hilton, the two original Victorian railway hotels, are the only 5-star luxury hotels in Edinburgh located on Princes Street itself:

• Balmoral Hotel is in the East End of Princes Street, right next to Waverley Railway Station and a couple of minute walk from St Andrew's Bus Station.
• Caledonian Hilton, on the other hand, is at the West End of Princes St.

In terms of access to the shopping areas, restaurants and bars of Rose Street and George Street, both of these luxury Princes Street hotels are ideally located. For access to the Old Town and Edinburgh Castle, however, the Balmoral is better located than the Caledonian.

Even though the Caledonian appears to be closer to Edinburgh Castle on the map of the city, it's important to remember that the Castle is a fortress built atop an extinct volcano and its west and south faces (those nearest to the Caledonian) are inaccessible, sheer rock faces.

Basically, if you choose to stay at the 5-star rated Caledonian Hotel, you face a fairly uphill walk to the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle via King's Stables Road and the Grassmarket. If you stay at the luxurious Balmoral Hotel, however, the walk to Edinburgh Castle and the rest of the Old Town is shorter and not as steep.

Other five star hotels in Edinburgh close to Princes Street

Of all the other 5-star hotels in the city, the Scotsman Hotel, located on North Bridge, is closest to Princes Street. Other luxury hotels with a 5-star rating near Princes Street include The Glasshouse (on Leith Walk, in the East End) and the Sheraton Grand (in Festival Square, in the West End).

Then there are the Missoni Hotel and Witchery by the Castle, both on or very near the Royal Mile. They are both a short walk down to Princes Street via the Mound.
