Good Value for Money Luxury Hotels in Edinburgh

Apex Hotels

The four 4-star Apex Hotels, the Apex Waterloo, the Apex International and the Apex City and Apex European tend to be priced in the £65 to £115 range, depending on hotel and date. If you are flexible on your dates, you should check out their website for pricing as the prices can vary considerably even within the same week and if you can book ahead there are some excellent discounts. The Apex European, being further away from the centre, offers lower pricing then the other three central hotels. Free Wi-Fi is offered at all four of the Apex hotels and the Apex Waterloo and International have an indoor swimming pool and other leisure facilities.

Princes Street Suites

The 5-star Princes Street Suites serviced apartments is also one to watch out for as they were offering heavily discounted prices on certain dates, mainly last-minute bookings. Depending on the dates you can pick up a studio apartment with kitchen and dining area or even a one or two bedroom apartment for under £70 - the same price or less as one double room in many of the 4-star hotels. Prices include free Wi-Fi. This could work out as one of the best deals going out of all the 4 and 5 star hotels, particularly if you are travelling as a group. The official Princes Street Suite website lists all rates by date on one page, so you can see at a glance which are the cheapest nights and if you are flexible on dates you can find yourself a bargain.

Knight Residence

The 5-star The Knight Residence serviced apartments are also offering excellent discounts for late bookings, and you can pick a one bedroom apartment with lounge, dining area and fully equipped kitchen, including free Wi-Fi for around £100 on certain dates.

Thistle King James Hotel

The 4-star King James Hotel, part of the Thistle chain of hotels, is located in Leith Street, a short walk from both Princes Street and the Royal Mile. Prices on the third party booking sites start from around £60 per night for last minute bookings and £100 for bookings several months in advance. The last minute prices are extremely good value for a 4-star hotel and amongst the cheapest to be found - often cheaper than guest houses for many dates. Prices on their official site start at around £60 for last-minute bookings. This does not include breakfast, Wi-Fi or parking but breakfast can be added for just £10 which seems very good value.

Missoni Hotel

The fashionable 5-star Missoni Hotel ranges from around £120 to £180 depending on the dates but it does include Wi-Fi, 2 items of laundry, movies and the contents of the mini-bar - with so many included extras it does offer a good deal.

Best Western Bruntsfield

One 4-star hotel just outside of the city centre in the £90 to £115 range depending on dates is the modern Best Western Bruntsfield hotel, located a little way out of the centre in the Bruntsfield area. The rates do not include breakfast but they do include Wi-Fi and parking which makes it very good value for money.

Salisbury Hotel

The 4-star boutique Salisbury Hotel is a 20-minute walk from the centre of the city in the suburb of Newington. There were discounted deals from around £70 room only (with Wi-Fi) on the discount sites although these did not seem to be reflected on the official booking site.

Hilton Caledonian

The landmark 5-star Hilton Caledonian hotel has standard rooms between £110 and £150 a night depending on the dates. For a 5-star hotel with leisure facilities right in the centre of Edinburgh, this does represent good value but does not include breakfast, parking or internet access.

Sheraton Grand

The modern 5-star Sheraton Hotel has rooms from around £120 on some dates, but does not include Wi-Fi, breakfast or parking. It does have some incredible leisure and spa facilities but many are chargeable so factor this into your budget.

The oriental 5-star Number 10 Hotel offers deals from just under £100 for one of their small doubles. Breakfast is not included in the cheaper deals but is charged at a reasonable price.

Radisson Blu

The contemporary 4-star Radisson Blu Hotel, situated right on the Royal Mile has got some of the best deals for a 4-star hotel on the third party discount sites and on their official website, especially for advance bookings. In fact on certain dates, at between £70 and £90, it is cheaper than some of the guest houses in the same area. It has free Wi-Fi and although the parking is chargeable, it is reasonably priced compared to many other hotels. There is also a health club and swimming pool, making it excellent value for money.

Barcelo Carlton

The modern 4-star Carlton Barcelo hotel on North Bridge was showing discounted offers on third party sites from around £80 for certain dates, not including breakfast or parking. However there were some excellent package deals to be found on their website from just £47 per person, including breakfast and dinner.

The 4-star boutique Bonham Hotel is located in a quiet area of the West End, a short walk from Princes Street. Whilst it does not have the cheapest nightly rates (around £95 to £110), you do get alot for your money, with free valet parking and free Wi-Fi as well as breakfast included.

Hudson Hotel

Prices for the 4-star boutique Hudson Hotel near George Street ranged from £90 to £115 on the discount sites - but better deals are to be found on their website, with prices at just £69 per room on many dates. There is also a 20% reduction for stays of 3-5 nights on certain dates. Prices do not include breakfast or parking but they do include Wi-Fi.

Novotel Centre

The 4-star Novotel Hotel in 80, Lauriston Place, is around a fifteen minute walk to the centre of Edinburgh. The prices on the third party sites and their official site were fairly consistent at around £75 to £100 per night for a double room, with neither Wi-Fi or breakfast included. There is no parking, but there is an indoor heated pool and gym and the consistent pricing makes it good value for money overall.

Other good hotels

Other 4-star hotels in the city centre which range from around £85 to £115 are the elegant George Hotel, the boutique Ricks Hotel, the Frederick (free Wi-Fi) and the Royal Terrace, however they also have discounted offers on their website.

There were many 4 star hotels in the city centre which range from around £90 for last minute discounts through to £115 for advance booking. These include the two 4-star Macdonald hotels, the traditional Roxburghe Hotel in the West End of Princes Street and the modern Macdonald Holyrood. Neither hotel includes breakfast, parking or Wi-Fi in their rate but they do offer leisure facilities.

The Holyrood Aparthotel if also worth checking out - their website offers prices from as low as £129 for an apartment suitable for 2 adults and 2 children.

Conclusion - Finding a good value hotel in Edinburgh

Apart from the hotels listed here you can pick up some great deals if you are prepared to spend some time researching the options. We have randomly checked several dates but you need to do your homework to find the best deal for your trip.

Some hotels or serviced apartments such as the Princes Street Suites and King James offer great last minutes discounts, while others such as the Radisson Blu offer better prices for forward booking. It pays to search across a range of discount websites as well as the hotel's own as the prices can vary widely between them. It also helps if you can be flexible with your dates.

If you plan far enough in advance it is clear that you can pick up 4-star hotels for less than the price of a guest house and 5-star hotels for less than the price of a 4-star hotel so it does pay to plan ahead.

What is clear though is that you should not be put off by the fact that a hotel is 4-star or 5-star as it might well be within your budget.

Please note that this information is intended to be a guide only. Although we have checked hotels across a range of dates for double occupancy, there may be others times when these hotels are more expensive than other 4 and 5-star hotels in the city centre. We purposely did not check dates during peak times such as the Fringe Festival as prices are far higher during this time.

Note that many of the offers on the internet are non-refundable both for last minute and advance purchases so check the terms and conditions of any offers. Prices are shown per room unless otherwise stated.
