Hotels Near Edinburgh Castle

Ideas for accommodation close to Edinburgh Castle

There are plenty hotels very close to Edinburgh Castle but there are no hotels on the actual Royal Mile -- the street leading to the Castle. Most of the hotels in the City Centre are quite expensive, whether, it's the Balmoral Hotel or some other hotel.

If you plan to stay in the immediate vicinity of Edinburgh Castle then I suggest you stay in a guest house or bed and breakfast. It's much cheaper and the quality is outstanding as well.

Edinburgh is a very welcoming place so a B&B or guest house as opposed to a hotel might have a more homely feel to them. You won't pay a fortune for an expensive hotel and still be very close to Edinburgh Castle and the Castle Rock.

Good alternatives to a hotel near Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh has thousands of hotels, bed and breakfasts and guesthouses but finding one close to or with views of the Castle Rock and Edinburgh Castle can be tricky. Even a search on Google returned nothing useful.

While searching tourist forums I came across 2 guest house often mentioned by visitors: Castle Guest House and Castle View Guest House. They are both located on Castle Street, a short walking distance from Edinburgh's main street.

The names of the 2 guesthouses can be misleading but they are in fact distinct. As soon as you step out from the guest houses and look along Castle Street you can see how close Edinburgh Castle really is.

There is also the opportunity to rent an apartment in the Grassmarket located in Edinburgh's Old Town. Alternatively there are some guest houses and apartments near the Castle Terrace.

Accommodation in this area has good view of the Castle's South side. The area near Castle Terrace is never really all that busy so you can avoid the crowds of tourists.

Nearer the Royal Mile, however, there is the Castle Rock Hostel which students and independent tourists say it's very good, clean and the staff are very friendly.

At the opposite end of the price spectrum there's The Witchery By The Castle, at the very top of the Royal Mile, near the gates of Edinburgh Castle. It's a 5-star accommodation with its own restaurant -- the menu at The Witchery By The Castle looks amazing although very expensive.

Staying in a castle hotel near Edinburgh

There is one castle hotel near Edinburgh which would be an excellent way to end a holiday in Scotland's Capital City. People usually choose to stay in a castle hotel on their last night or if it's on a special occasion like a romantic break or a wedding.

Dalhousie Castle Hotel

Dalhousie hotel is a 13th century castle and is near the picturesque river Esk, in Bonnyrigg, very near to Edinburgh. It has 14 historically themed bedrooms. It's close to Dalkeith Country Park and Rosslyn Chapel and Castle.

Origin of 'Edinburgh'

Tourists have problems with the name of Edinburgh. There are hundreds of ways people write it and the most common writings include 'edinburg', 'edinborough', 'edimburgh', 'edinbourgh', 'ediburgh', 'edinbugh', 'edinboro', 'edingburgh', 'edinbrugh', 'edimburg', 'edinburugh', 'edingurgh', 'edinbrough', etc.

According to the Scottish Place Names dictionary, the name Edinburgh means 'Fort of the Rock Face'. The 'edin' part comes from Scottish Gaelic and means 'rock face', while 'burgh' comes from Old English meaning stronghold.

Some more obscure (and quite funny) ways of writing Edinburgh include: edinburough, edingburg, edinbourg, edinburh, edinurgh, edenburg, edinbough, edinbourough, edinbrgh, edingborough, edenburgh, edinberg, edinborgh, edinborugh, edinburge, edinburhg, edingbourgh, etc.

Edinburgh is spelt Edimburgo in Spanish and Italian and Édimbourg in French.
