Cheapest Way to Get From Edinburgh, Scotland to Dublin, Ireland by Bus

Looking for the cheapest and quickest way to get from Edinburgh to Dublin by bus? Be aware that there is no direct bus service available connecting Dublin to Edinburgh, so you will have to make one or more changes depending on the route.

There are, however, three main options available to travel by Eurolines/National Express coach from Edinburgh Scotland to Ireland:

  • Take the bus from Edinburgh to Belfast and then catch a local bus or train from Belfast onwards to Dublin.
  • Take a National Express coach or Megabus service from Eurolines coach to Dublin.
  • Take a Eurolines/National Express bus from Edinburgh to Dublin on a through ticket via Manchester Airport (on the return journey from Dublin to Edinburgh though, there are three stops in Holyhead, Manchester Airport and Glasgow).

How long does it take from Scotland to Ireland with Eurolines/National Express and/or the Megabus?

Edinburgh to Belfast/Belfast to Dublin - Option 1

The journey from Edinburgh to Belfast with Ulsterbus Express 923 (which you can book through National Express) takes around 7 hours 25 minutes to 8 hours 35 minutes plus the onwards journey time to Dublin of around 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours. The cheapest single ticket for the dates we checked were £25.00 and the cheapest return ticket was £38.50, plus the cost of the onward journey from Belfast to Dublin.

Edinburgh to Manchester/Manchester to Dublin - Option 2

The journey takes anything between 6 h 25 minutes to 9 hours 25 minutes to travel between Edinburgh and Manchester and then another 5 h 10 minutes to 5 h 20 minutes to travel onwards to Dublin, excluding waiting times between connections. You have a choice between travelling by Megabus. The cheapest single ticket between Edinburgh and Dublin that we could find was £19.00 and the cheapest return ticket we could find was £30.80. These prices reflect the fact that on some dates we were able to find the £1 Megabus fares, but these are strictly limited.

Edinburgh to Dublin via Manchester Airport - Option 3

The journey from Edinburgh to Dublin via Manchester Airport takes around 21 hours including connecting times as it is booked as a through ticket. On the return journey from Dublin to Edinburgh it takes 23 hours and 25 minutes as the indirect bus goes via Holyhead, Manchester Airport and Glasgow. The cheapest single ticket that we were able to find was £47.00 and the cheapest return ticket was £59.00.

There are two buses from Edinburgh to Belfast daily with National Express

The first bus leaves Edinburgh at 09:30 in the morning and arrives into Belfast Europa Bus Centre at around 18:05 in the afternoon, except on Friday and Sunday when it arrives at 17:05 in the afternoon.

Last buses

The last bus leaves Edinburgh at 15:15 in the afternoon, getting into Belfast at around 22:40 in the evening.

Night buses

There are no overnight buses from Edinburgh to Belfast.

First and last buses from Edinburgh to Manchester and Manchester to Dublin

The first direct National Express bus leaves Edinburgh 06:45 in the morning arriving in Manchester at 16:00 in the afternoon, except on Saturday and Sunday when it leaves at 07:00 and arrives at 16:00.

The only Megabus leaves Edinburgh at 05:10 in the morning and reaches Manchester at 10:30 in the morning. Note - this service arrives at Shudehill interchange, not Manchester Coach Station, therefore you will need to make your way to Manchester Coach Station for the connecting bus.

The only Eurolines bus from Manchester leaves at 19:45 in the evening, getting into Dublin at 06:30 in the morning.

Although indirect routes can often add an hour or two to your journey they are actually the same or shorter than the direct journeys on some National Express schedules.

What Is The Best Option to Travel to Dublin from Edinburgh By Coach?

The best way to travel from Scotland to Ireland by bus is probably to take the National Express/Eurolines service which leaves Edinburgh at 09:15 and arrives at 16:20 in the afternoon. There is a 09:30 and 09:45 departure too but these take far longer and although you should be there in time for the 19:45 departure, it is probably better to wait at the station than in the bus where you might have delays.

There is one National Express bus a day which leaves Edinburgh at 09:30 in the morning.

It only has one change at Manchester Airport but unfortunately as the bus to Manchester Airport has so many stops, the journey time on the first leg is 9 hours and 50 minutes, giving an overall journey time of 21 hours and arriving in Dublin at 06:30 in the morning.

It is still worth considering this option as the overall journey times does include connections, so compare it with the other two options for your chosen dates.

First and last buses from Dublin to Manchester and Manchester to Edinburgh

There is only one National Express bus which leaves Dublin at 20:05 in the evening and gets into Manchester Coach Station at 06:05 in the morning.

There is a National Express which leaves Manchester Coach Station at 08:45 in the morning, arriving at Edinburgh Bus Station at 16:35 in the afternoon. This service has two stops in Leeds and Newcastle Upon Tyne and takes around 7 hours and 50 minutes however it is still quicker than many of the direct schedules.

There is a Megabus which leaves Manchester Shudehill Interchange at 19:30, getting into Edinburgh at around 00:40 in the morning but although this may be a cheaper option it involves too much waiting around.

The National Express bus which leaves Manchester at 08:45 and arrives in Edinburgh at around 16:35 is the best connection even though it is not a direct one.

There is only one bus per day which leaves Dublin at 20:05 in the evening and gets into Edinburgh at 19:30 in the evening the next day. Although there is only one change on the Edinburgh to Dublin route, the return journey has three stops in Holyhead, Manchester Airport and Glasgow, making the total journey time 23 hours 25 minutes. Compared with the other options this is probably the slowest of the journeys but still worth checking out.
