The 4-star Apex International is situated in the Grassmarket area of Edinburgh. Some of the rooms have two Queen size beds, making them suitable for two adults and two children. Children under 12 sharing a room with their parents eat and stay for free and teenagers under 17 stay for free. The Apex International really goes the extra mile to provide a varied selection of facilities for children.
To keep the children occupied there is a swimming pool with free towels, a free DVD library, toy boxes and board games which can be borrowed to use in public areas and treasure hunts. For babies there are bottle warmers, changing mats and sterilisers. There is also a comprehensive children's menu on offer.
The 4-star Holyrood Aparthotel is located at the east end of the Royal Mile and has 41 two-bedroom apartments with separate lounge, dining area and fully equipped kitchen, making it ideal for families with children. There is a dishwasher and washing machine in each apartment, as well as a flat screen TV and DVD player. There is a chargeable DVD library at reception. Children under 3 years old stay for free and there are free cots and high chairs available. There are special rates for children between 4 and 14 and special family breaks are available.
The 4-star Novotel Hotel is situated in Lauriston Place, on the edge of the Old Town. Family rooms are available and kids under 16 eat and stay for free plus there is late check-out of 5PM on a Sunday for families. There is also a play area and a swimming pool to keep them busy.
The 4-star boutique Salisbury Hotel is situated in a quiet residential area, a 20 minute walk from the centre. This welcoming family owned hotel has 18 guest rooms, including some family rooms, and there is a safe high-walled garden with climbing frame for the kids to play in.
The exclusive 5-star Edinburgh Residence, is a collection of 29 suites, located in a quiet street in the West End of Edinburgh. Some of the suites have separate living rooms, making them more spacious for families, and there are cots and high chairs available on request. Despite the elegant and luxurious accommodation, they make an effort to be family friendly and there are colouring books and board games to keep the kids entertained.
There is also a special child's menu, designed to be nutritious as well as fun and they supply night-time milk and cookies on request. There are also microwaves and cutlery in the rooms, so basic food can be prepared and heated. Babysitting can also be arranged by the hotel.
The 5-star Chester Residence, is a collection of one or two bedroom serviced apartments, a 10-minute walk from Princes Street. Offering a lounge, dining area and fully-equipped kitchen, they make a comfortable home from home for any family and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming despite the luxury. There is a wide-screen TV, free Wi-Fi, Sky TV and a DVD player to keep the children busy.
There is also complimentary use of a Sony PSP with games. Some of the apartments have direct access to the garden for the kids to run around in, however the upper rooms may be less suitable for families with pushchairs as there is no lift. They run a special 'Family Fun' promotion which includes the use of board games, DVDs, as well as snacks and treats for the kids.
For the parents it also includes money off a meal at the Rutland Restaurant and a babysitter for five hours. The package also includes free entry to Edinburgh Zoo and a free upgrade to a Mews Suite where available. All young arrivals receive a free Chester teddy bear.

It is very child friendly and extra sofa beds and cots are available on request. The Superior apartments also have a video and Hi-Fi system in the lounge, a TV/DVD in every bedroom and a selection of CDs and videos in each apartment. DVD's are available to borrow from reception. Children under 17 stay for free. There are also pushchairs available to borrow and a babysitting service can be arranged on request.
Fountain Court Apartments
The 5-star Fountain Court Apartments EQ-2 are in an up-and-coming area of the West End of Edinburgh and offer one to three bedroom apartments, many with views over the canals or Edinburgh Castle. There are high chairs and cots on request, and there are CD players and Wi-Fi in each apartment. It is also possible to hire board games, Nintendo Wii and Playstations from reception.
Hilton Caledonian Hotel
The 5-star Hilton Caledonian, is situated on Princes Street, and many of the rooms can take one or more children on request. There is a pool in the hotel to keep the children occupied and on-demand movies in all guest rooms. There are also cots and high chairs as well as a children's menu.

These hotels and serviced apartments are the ones that we feel really go out of their way to provide a warm welcome to families with children or babies. Many of them provide excellent facilities to keep the children occupied and most of them will provide high chairs and cots on request, as well as having separate children's menus.
The serviced apartments will always be the most spacious and flexible options for families with kids as there are separate lounge areas plus there is the flexibility to prepare food in the apartment, but not all of them will have restaurant or room service facilities. The hotels listed here, too, really do go that extra mile to make sure that families are welcome by providing activities and extra touches to make junior feel at home.
