Greyfriars Bobby

My nephew (5) and niece (7) know the tale of Bobby, then at St. Giles Cathedral, one of the docents sat them down and told it to them aloud. We were staying near the Kirk anyhow, and how the kids lit up when we walked them to the kirkyard and gravestones. Its a great way to discuss graves and death, see a great church and discuss a story that they could see with their own eyes. We had trouble finding the statue, which is actually outside on a triangle in the street! Also inside the graveyard is a memorial to the Covenanters. Well worth reading the story before and a great trek out for kids. We went back twice!

Museum of Edinburgh

Another museum on the Royal Mile with free admission is the Museum of Edinburgh. It is located just opposite Canongate Tolbooth in an old restored house from the 16th century. If you don't have time to see the whole museum you can at least go inside to see the house, which was a typical aristocratic house in this part of the Royal Mile. As the name indicates the museum's exhibition is about the history of Edinburgh.
