Other events taking place in Edinburgh at New Year

Unique Events, the company behind all of Edinburgh's New Year celebrations raises the stakes higher every year.

As well as the famous Hogmanay Street Party, Torchlight Procession and Night Afore Fiesta, the main three New Year events, every year there are other one-off events to make Hogmanay celebrations the best in the world.

Previous years have seen the exciting New Year events in Edinburgh continuing through to January 1st with 2005-2009 set to be the same.

To give you some idea of what to expect, here are some events of previous years:

• Candlelit Concert in St Giles Cathedral - A more spiritual way of greeting the New Year for locals and tourists alike in the unique setting of Edinburgh's most important church.
• The New Year Revels - The Assembly Rooms in George Street, in the heart of Edinburgh, provide the venue for this famous New Year celebration with ceilidh, dancing and late night clubbing. Tickets are a bit pricey but this event is one of the most sought-after New Year parties in Edinburgh.
• Parklife! - After New Year revellers have recovered from late night partying, it's time for an exciting programme of family events and sports, all taking place in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh's famous urban park.
• The One O'Clock Run - The run is given the green light by the One O'Clock Gun in Edinburgh Castle. It starts from the Esplanade and then it's all going downhill along the Royal Mile, through the Palace of Holyroodhouse's quadrangle to join Parklife.
• Huskies Go To Holyrood - Two hours of watching furry and friendly sled-dog Huskies racing around Holyrood Park.

Origin of 'Edinburgh'

Tourists have problems with the name of Edinburgh. There are hundreds of ways people write it and the most common writings include 'edinburg', 'edinborough', 'edimburgh', 'edinbourgh', 'ediburgh', 'edinbugh', 'edinboro', 'edingburgh', 'edinbrugh', 'edimburg', 'edinburugh', 'edingurgh', 'edinbrough', etc.

According to the Scottish Place Names dictionary, the name Edinburgh means 'Fort of the Rock Face'. The 'edin' part comes from Scottish Gaelic and means 'rock face', while 'burgh' comes from Old English meaning stronghold.

Some more obscure (and quite funny) ways of writing Edinburgh include: edinburough, edingburg, edinbourg, edinburh, edinurgh, edenburg, edinbough, edinbourough, edinbrgh, edingborough, edenburgh, edinberg, edinborgh, edinborugh, edinburge, edinburhg, edingbourgh, etc.

Edinburgh is spelt Edimburgo in Spanish and Italian and Édimbourg in French.
