The Holyrood Hotel

Rooms and suites at the Holyrood

There are 156 en-suite bedrooms at the Holyrood Hotel: Standard, Superior and Executive Club with prices ranging from £60.00 to £150.00. There are no single rooms and for a business or luxury short break there's the option of a suite at the top floor -- the Butler's Floor Club.

The rooms on the hotel's club floor are bigger but what sets them apart is the private lift access, private library with open fire, lounge and bar and of course, your own butler service. Nice touches include champagne and canape reception every evening at 6:30pm as well as complimentary goodies. The personalised service at the Holyrood Hotel's luxury rooms give you a sense of exclusivity.

The hotel facilities exceed some of the ones in other four-star hotels in Edinburgh City Centre. All rooms have air conditioning, satellite TV, mini bar, ironing board, trouser press, tea and coffee making facilities, bathrobes and slippers, as well as nice toiletries.

The Holyrood Hotel doesn't, however, have in-room safes which can be a problem if you want to leave your laptop behind while you're sightseeing Edinburgh.

The new Scottish Parliament has been completed in November 2004 near the Holyrood Hotel and noise is therefore, not much of a problem unlike with the more centrally placed Edinburgh accommodation.

Origin of 'Edinburgh'

Tourists have problems with the name of Edinburgh. The most common writings include 'edinburg', 'edinborough', 'edimburgh', 'edinbourgh', 'ediburgh', 'edinbugh', 'edinboro', etc.

According to the Scottish Place Names dictionary, the name Edinburgh means 'Fort of the Rock Face'. The 'edin' part comes from Scottish Gaelic and means 'rock face', while 'burgh' comes from Old English meaning stronghold.
