Are you considering a stay at the Missoni Hotel in Edinburgh? Opened in June 2009, this uniquely fashionable hotel is a tempting choice. With Lady Gaga and Snow Patrol on its former guest list and a perfect location in the bustling heart of the Old Town, so close to the Royal Mile, this is a designer hotel with a difference. But is this a better choice for you than other 5-star hotels in Edinburgh?

I've read hundreds of reviews from guests who have stayed at the Missoni since it opened and the following is a clear and unbiased summary of what these guests really thought of their stay at this hotel.

What's special about the Missoni Hotel?

  • Modern and funky hotel interior, based on Missoni's distinctive design elements including zig-zag patterns, and bold bright colours, whilst the unique modernist exterior is a visually stunning piece of architecture.
  • Bar Missoni, noted for its cocktails, is already gaining the reputation as one of the most fashionable haunts in Edinburgh.
  • Of special mention is the service, which is considered by many to be faultless, with an emphasis on personal and friendly service, and an incredible array of extras on offer.
  • Location: The hotel is conveniently situated in the heart of the Old Town, with each guest room enjoying a view over the atmospheric Victoria Street, Arthur's Seat or Edinburgh Castle.

What do guests really think?

The vast majority of reviewers were positive, and most of those who did find fault with one or more aspects would still recommend the hotel. Even though the Missoni has only been open since June 2009, many reviewers are already talking with anticipation about their next stay. It appears that the few bad reviews of Hotel Missoni stem back from when the hotel first opened, which would indicate that there may have been some teething problems which have since been put right:

  • Hotel Missoni offers a truly unique designer experience, with many people commenting that it really is a hotel with a difference. Glamour, modern, cool and trendy are all words that are used time and time again by reviewers.
  • The cleanliness of the guest rooms and bathrooms was a recurring theme in many reviews.
  • Reviewers were especially pleased with the state-of-the art technology and attention to detail, such as the Nespresso coffee machines and Wi-Fi Internet in the bedrooms, and the steam-free mirrors and speaker system in the bathrooms, which were all mentioned frequently.

My Recommendation

If you are looking for a traditional hotel, Hotel Missoni is certainly not the right choice for you. But if you are looking for a hip, modern, vibrant and luxurious hotel, something a little different, then this could certainly be what you are looking for.

It is definitely not one of the cheaper options, but it offers what many consider to be a unique and individual experience. In addition there are many extras included in the price (fairly unusual when compared to other luxury hotels), such as laundry, Wi-Fi, films on demand, and a small mini-bar. Having read the mainly exceptional reviews, and with a few reviewers even quoting it as the best hotel they have ever stayed in, I think this glamorous hotel is definitely worth a visit.

In Depth Review of the Missoni Hotel in Edinburgh

Funky and very modern design luxury hotel. Ultra central location next to Royal Mile.

What is the Missoni Hotel like?

Most guests find the building of the hotel itself to be stunning and the modern architecture is what makes the Missoni Hotel so famous. This Victorian building conversion retains many of its historic features alongside the modern touches while its intricate layout gives it an unusual character. However, many guests have reported the following.

Building and room design

  • The modern and hugely daring design of the hotel, based on the Missoni signature themes and bold colours, is unique and is loved by most reviewers, although a few have found it pretentious and would have preferred something more traditional.
  • The Missoni brand has a very distinctive signature design, and this is incorporated throughout the hotel, from the wavy monochrome carpets, to the bed linen and cushions, and even the bathrobes. The colours and design features are loud and bold, and yet this seems to be appealing to the majority of the guests.
  • Although generally the rooms are not considered to be very spacious, most guests consider them to be extremely luxurious, well appointed and extremely well maintained. A few guests were not happy with the amount of hanging space and general storage, but generally these did not detract from the enjoyment of their stay.
  • Beds are considered extremely comfortable, and most guests had a good night sleep, however a few did complain that some of the rooms are noisy (this may be related to the older part of the building which is not double glazed) and that some of the rooms are hot, as it is difficult to adjust the temperature.
  • Most reviewers praise the bathrooms with their bold colours, excellent design, and finishing touches such as under floor heating, steam-free mirrors, speaker system and Missoni toiletries. Most rooms, however, have showers, rather than baths and a few guests were disappointed by this and also by the fact that the sliding door of the bathroom does not offer total privacy.
  • Unusually, the mini-bar items are free, although some guests were not so enthusiastic about the limited selection of milk, water, beers and crisps.
  • There is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, and even laptops are available at reception to borrow if needed.
  • Most people loved the Nespresso coffee machine, although some have found it difficult to use. Some also had difficulties using the iPod connection to the TV.
  • There is a fitness centre in the hotel, although this was not mentioned in any of the reviews.

Staff and level of service

  • Many reviewers commented on the friendliness of the staff and the proactive way in which they assist the guests. They felt that this is one of the strengths of the hotel, and it has made a real difference to the enjoyment of many guests.
  • There were a few reviewers who were not happy with the level of service that the staff offered, although these were few and far between.
  • Some people did point out that the reception desk was undermanned and that service was slow, although these did seem to be comments made when the hotel first opened and any problems may well have been resolved by now.
  • The overall cleanliness was much commented upon and the rooms were frequently described as spotless.

Food and drink

  • Breakfast was a mixed bag of reviews, ranging from excellent to poor, and some also commenting that it is expensive if not included in the room rate.
  • Guests were generally very happy with the Italian restaurant, Cucina, which attracted mainly positive reviews, although a small percentage of diners rated the food as average and sometimes expensive.
  • Bar Missoni, with its quirky bold decor, Missoni print sofas, and fabulous range of cocktails is making its name as a trendy bar for guests and locals alike, although some felt that the cocktails are overpriced.

Location and parking

  • Most guests appreciate the hotel's ultra central location on the Royal Mile, convenient for most of the city's tourist attractions, and very near to Edinburgh Castle.
  • However they do not appreciate the parking facilities! This was frequently a cause for dissatisfaction in the reviews, as the parking space is limited, should be booked ahead and is considered extremely expensive.
  • There is, however, an NCP car park approximately 5 minutes walk away, which is a less expensive option.
  • The hotel is a 5-10 minute walk from the main railway station, although it must be pointed out that the hill is fairly steep. The Edinburgh airport buses also leave Waverley Bridge.

Nice touches

  • Guests are greeted by the unusual sight of the porter wearing a signature Missoni-style kilt.
  • Many unusual freebies are included in the room rate, such as in-house films, Wi-Fi, laundry and even a mini-bar.
  • Many guests reported receiving extras such as cakes, handwritten cards and even upgrades when booking in for special occasions.
