Royal Mile Accommodation in Edinburgh
The medieval Old Town of Edinburgh is the most popular area of Edinburgh to stay in and my personal favourite.
The Old Town is made up of the Royal Mile which acts as the spine of the area from which the narrow alleyways and roads emerge. However, the Old Town is not just the Royal Mile and it comprises much of the area south of Princes Street, including North and South Bridge, Grassmarket and Cowgate, as well as the University of Edinburgh area. The Old Town is dominated by Edinburgh Castle and it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This picturesque area of Edinburgh is home to many architecturally important buildings from the 16th and 17th century and has some of the tallest buildings of the age (which were often many storeys high due to lack of space in the area).
The Old Town of Edinburgh is full of history and character and visitors to the city like to spend time just walking around this compact but hilly area, soaking up the history and atmosphere. It is no wonder then, that many visitors choose to stay in hotels around here, the historic heart of the city, small and very atmospheric.
The good news is that many of Edinburgh's top hotels are located around the Royal Mile and Grassmarket areas so which are some of the best hotels in the Old Town of Edinburgh?

Which Hotels are Located in the Old Town area of Edinburgh
All of the hotels and apartments on Royal Mile and in the immediate vicinity are considered to be Old Town accommodation. Some of the most popular ones include the gothic Witchery by the Castle, the 5-star trendy Missoni, the 4-star Radisson Blu Hotel and the 4-star Macdonald Holyrood hotel on the Royal Mile itself.
However, the Old Town is not just about the Royal Mile. There are many good hotels in other parts of the atmospheric Edinburgh Old Town.
Conclusion - Staying in the Old Town of Edinburgh
Many people associate the Old Town of Edinburgh with the Royal Mile but as you can see the medieval heart of the City covers a far wider area. There is a good choice of accommodation available in this historic area.
Where to stay comes down mainly to personal preference in terms of location. Hotels right on the Royal Mile are noisier, especially at night, and are less likely to have on-site parking whereas some of the accommodation on the outskirts of the Old Town (which sounds deceptively far but in reality it's still within walking distance of Edinburgh City Centre) are quieter and are more likely to have parking.
