Which Hotel to Stay in near Princes Street
The 5-star Balmoral Hotel, part of the Rocco Forte chain of hotels, is located at number 1 Princes Street (in the East End of Princes Street, right next to Waverley Railway Station) and a 2 minute walk from St Andrew's Bus Station. This regal hotel is one of the true Edinburgh landmarks, with a 195 clock tower which is always traditionally set two minutes fast.
The guest rooms are individually designed in a traditional and luxurious style and some of them have fabulous views of Princes Street, the Old Town and Edinburgh Castle. There is a Michelin starred restaurant, Number 1 and an award winning spa. The Balmoral is an expensive luxury hotel but if you want a hotel right on Princes Street with excellent facilities, the Balmoral Hotel can be an excellent choice.
The 5-star Caledonian Hotel on the other hand, is at the West End of Princes St. This historic Edwardian hotel offers traditional and elegant luxury accommodation, with the Deluxe rooms offering amazing views of Edinburgh Castle and the city.

In terms of access to the shopping areas, restaurants and bars of Rose Street and George Street, both of these luxury Princes Street hotels are ideally located. For access to the Old Town and Edinburgh Castle, however, the Balmoral is better located than the Caledonian.
Even though the Caledonian appears to be closer to Edinburgh Castle on the map of the city, it's important to remember that the Castle is a fortress built atop an extinct volcano and its west and south faces (those nearest to the Caledonian) are inaccessible, sheer rock faces.
