My Recommendation

It is difficult to make a final recommendation on the Ramada Mount Royal due to the extremely mixed nature of the reviews. The one advantage that it does have over other better hotels is its very central location in the centre of the city and many guests were prepared to overlook the fact that some of the guest rooms were not up to an acceptable standard.

The Ramada Mount Royal Hotel is also relatively inexpensive, so many reviewers did feel that it was good value for money. If you want to stay right in the city centre of Edinburgh and are on a limited budget, then I would make the cautious recommendation to consider staying at the Ramada as long as you are aware of what to expect.

I would recommend contacting the hotel in advance to check the type of room that you will be staying in. I would maybe ask for a refurbished room on the higher floors overlooking Edinburgh Castle, even if it means paying slightly extra.

You should also mention if you do not smoke and ask for confirmation that you will receive a non-smoking room. Lastly, although this hotel is not in an expensive price bracket, I would try to get a good deal on the Internet for best value for money.

Building and room design

  • There are 158 guest rooms, some with views over Princes Street and Edinburgh Castle. The Executive rooms have a balcony to enjoy the view.
  • Although many guests described the rooms as adequate, clean and comfortable, there were equally as many who said that the rooms are in urgent need of refurbishment. Many also said that the rooms are very small, although this depends on the type of room rate selected.
  • Many guests complained that the rooms smelt badly of cigarette smoke, even those who had specifically requested non-smoking rooms.
  • The guest rooms overlooking Princes Street and the Castle have great views, but some guests reported that these rooms are extremely noisy from the traffic and people below.
  • The rooms which do not have scenic views overlook buildings and many guests complained that they could not sleep due to the noise from air conditioning units from neighbouring properties.
  • Several reviewers also complained that the sound-proofing between guest rooms was bad and that they could hear everything from neighbouring rooms.
  • There were several reports of the guest rooms being unbearably hot due to the heated towel rail in the bathroom which cannot be turned off.
  • Many guests complained that the beds are extremely shabby, old and uncomfortable.

Staff and level of service

  • Many reviewers praised the helpfulness of the staff and their willingness to resolve any problems quickly and efficiently.
  • There were also some who found the staff at reception very friendly and efficient, although a few mentioned long queues due to understaffing.
  • Several guests said that although they had arrived in the morning the hotel made the effort to check them in early.

Food and drink

  • Breakfast seems to be one of the strengths of the Ramada Mount Royal Hotel. The majority of guests agreed that it was excellent quality with generous portions, although a few said that the service was a little chaotic.
  • There is a restaurant, the Arts Brasserie which has very good views over the castle. Most reviewers who had eaten here said that it was good quality and represented value for money, especially the set menus.

Location and parking

  • The location is probably the biggest advantage of the Ramada Mount Royal Hotel, as it is convenient for shopping, eating out and visiting the Edinburgh attractions. It is also situated next to a major department store.
  • Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile are both a 5-minute walk away. The Ramada Hotel is approximately 200m away from Waverley train station and 600m from the bus station.
  • There is no parking at the hotel and because it's right on Princes Street, it is difficult to even stop to leave luggage. There is discounted parking at an NCP car-park a 10-minute walk away.

Nice touches

As a 3-star hotel, the Ramada Mount Royal Hotel concentrates on providing comfortable, value for money accommodation rather than nice touches.
