In Depth Review of the Salisbury Hotel in Edinburgh
Small, contemporary boutique hotel. Quiet Newington location near City Centre and University.
Average room price per night: £65-£140 ($102-$220)
What is the Salisbury Hotel like?
The Salisbury Hotel opened in 2007 as a contemporary boutique hotel. It is renovated from a pair of semi-detached Georgian townhouses and the Salisbury retains many of its period features such as fireplaces and working shutters. One of its strengths is the high level of service that it offers and the way in which guests are made to feel welcome and at home.
Building and room design
- There are 18 rooms of different sizes, each stylishly decorated in rich colours and retaining many of the period features such as high Georgian ceilings. The rooms are clean, modern and comfortable and many guests felt that they were also luxurious although some found them a little small.
- A couple of the rooms feature four-poster beds for a romantic stay, and some have direct access to the garden.
- There are also some family rooms with sofa beds and fridges. High chairs and cots are also available.
- The main complaints were that some of the rooms have a noisy water system in the bathroom while others are prone to flooding the floor when taking a shower.
- Most reviewers agreed that the hotel is spotlessly clean and comfortable.
- There is no lift at the Salisbury Hotel, which may make it difficult for less mobile guests.
Staff and level of service
- This aspect of the hotel seems to be outstanding and guests were extremely complimentary about the level of service, which they described as friendly and efficient.
- The staff make the effort to talk to the guests and help them to plan their trip, giving them information and assistance specifically tailored to them.
- Many people also commented that the owners themselves went out of their way to make the guests welcome, giving the hotel a real personal touch.
- Even those who reported problems with their stay were pleased with the way that issues were handled and resolved.
- The reception desk closes during the night, although a number is available to ring if required. Some guests, however, would have preferred a 24h service.
Food and drink
- Although with most hotels the breakfast reviews are usually very mixed, almost all guests agreed that the Salisbury Hotel served an excellent breakfast and that it represented good value for money.
- The continental breakfast is included, but for a small additional charge guests can choose to have a full Scottish breakfast including haggis and salmon (cooked to order), which most guests recommended paying extra for.
- Some guests would have preferred breakfast to start earlier than 08:00 am, although the hotel does provide breakfast packs upon request.
- The bistro style restaurant Gabbro was closed for several months, but the reviews prior to this suggested that it offered good quality, locally sourced ingredients and represented value for money.
Location and parking
- The Salisbury Hotel is a 20-minute walk from the centre of Edinburgh. There are frequent buses which pass close to the hotel and the bus journey takes about 5 minutes.
- This suited most reviewers who felt that the hotel was well located, although a few would have preferred to be closer to the centre.
- It is a 20-minute walk from Waverley Train Station, although some guests recommended taking a taxi.
- It is also close the Arthur's Seat, and it's convenient for those visiting the university.
- There is free car parking available, although some guests said that it was too small and that cars were often blocked in.
Nice touches
- The guest rooms offer excellent amenities such as an iPod docking station and free WiFi.
- The way the staff anticipate the requirements of the guests by talking to them individually.
- There are packed breakfasts available for those who cannot make breakfast.
