Quiet, Intimate and Small Boutique Hotels in Edinburgh

Witchery by the Castle

The Gothic inspired 5 star Witchery by the Castle is a small and definitely intimate hotel right on the Royal Mile with just eight suites, or rather a well-known restaurant with guest accommodation. The decadent and fantastically decorated suites have names such as the Inner Sanctum, the Armoury and the Old Rectory and the hotel has been visited by many celebrities over the years. It is one of the most expensive options in Edinburgh but fits the bill in every way. With a breakfast hamper delivered to your door every morning and a bottle of champagne on arrival, this is definitely a place to tuck yourself away for the weekend.

The Howard

The luxurious 5-star Howard Hotel is located in the New Town area, around a 10-minute walk from Princes Street. This renovated Georgian townhouse has just 18 guest rooms and suites, some of which have a private entrance and patio. The hotel offers an excellent service, including 24 hour butler service and free valet parking. Yet despite the opulent surroundings and high level of service, the Howard is renowned for its relaxed and friendly atmosphere and the staff go that extra mile to make guests feel welcome and at home.

Edinburgh Residence

The exclusive 5-star Edinburgh Residence, located in a quiet street in the West End of Edinburgh, is not as small as most of the other hotels on this list, with 29 suites - and yet we have included it here to the high level of privacy and intimacy that it offers its guests plus its quiet location. Each elegant and spacious suite is decorated to a high standard and is equipped with basic kitchen equipment and a separate dining area. Breakfast can be taken privately in the room and there is 24 hour room service. The hotel is committed to providing a relaxed and intimate, yet exclusive atmosphere and is a good choice for those who wish to have the flexibility of private dining.

Number 10

The 5-star Number 10 Hotel is situated in a quiet residential area of New Town, a short walk from Princes Street. This exclusive hotel has an oriental theme and the 15 guest rooms are elegantly decorated in dark tones, with antique Chinese furniture. Some of the rooms have direct access to the garden through patio doors.

Chester Residence

Although the luxurious 5-star Chester Residence, which is situated in a quiet area a 10-minute walk from Princes Street, is actually serviced apartments and not a hotel, we have included them here as they fit the bill in so many other ways. There are just 19 spacious apartments, with one or two bedrooms, some with direct access to a courtyard or garden and some with stunning views over Edinburgh. The emphasis is on a high personal level of service and, contrary to the atmosphere found in many 5-star serviced apartments, the staff are helpful and welcoming, and the atmosphere relaxed and comfortable. Guests can order from an organic menu for intimate private dining in the apartments and there is also a resident's lounge with honesty bar.

Rutland Hotel

The 4-star boutique Rutland Hotel is situated on Rutland Street, which joins the west of Princes Street and has just 12 rooms and suites. Although a fashionable and contemporary hotel, and maybe not as quiet as some of the other hotels on this list, it is far from pretentious and is known for its friendly and welcoming staff and high level of service.

Salisbury Hotel

The 4-star Salisbury Hotel is situated in a quiet residential area in the South Side of Edinburgh, a 20 minute walk from the centre. This family owned hotel has just 18 guest rooms, stylishly decorated and well maintained, with period features such as high Georgian ceilings. Some of the rooms have direct access to the high-walled garden.

The staff at the Salisbury go out of their way to make the guests feel at home and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. It is child-friendly, so may not be your first choice if you prefer a more adult atmosphere. If you are looking for a quiet hotel with a garden and don't mind walking or catching a bus to the centre then this could be a good option.

Ricks Hotel

The 4-star boutique Rick's Hotel is situated on Frederick Street, very close to lively George Street. The rooms are stylish and trendy, with custom designed furniture and very well-equipped, with iPods, free Wi-Fi and flat screen TVs. It is certainly intimate, as there are only 10 rooms, and the atmosphere is chilled and relaxed, with a high level of customer service. However it is in a lively area and there can be high noise levels at certain times as you would expect of a city centre hotel.

Conclusion - Staying at a small intimate hotel in central Edinburgh

The hotels listed here fit some or all of the criteria of small, intimate and quiet accommodation. Many of them are located a little further away from the centre of the city but are in much quieter neighbourhoods. A hotel which is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the Royal Mile or Princes Street is unlikely to suffer from the same noise issues that many of the central hotels do. You need to decide your priorities and if you are willing to walk a little during your stay, one of the quieter hotels in a residential area might be more suitable.

They are also more likely to have gardens to relax in and parking. When it comes to intimate, we have tried to pick the hotels which offer a discreet and unobtrusive service whilst keeping the atmosphere friendly and relaxed. Most of the hotels and serviced apartments here have under 20 rooms or suites which makes them small and intimate, as the staff can focus their welcome on their guests and offer a higher level of personal service.
