The Howard

The 5-star Howard Hotel is located in the New Town area, around a 10-minute walk from Princes Street. It is one of only two U.K hotels to be ranked in the top 25 European hotels in the prestigious Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice 2010 and with good reason. The 18 guest rooms are luxurious and elegant but it is the service where the Howard really comes into its own.

Free valet parking and a 24 hour butler service to take care of your every whim, the service is faultless and yet the staff manage to make their guests feel comfortable and at home. The Howard Hotel is one of the more expensive hotels but there are alot of extras included in the price.

Chester Residence

The luxurious 5-star serviced apartments, the Chester Residence are located in Rothesay Place, about a 10-minute walk from Princes Street. It is notable on several accounts including the spacious, stylish and well-maintained accommodation, equipped with the latest technology including a pre-loaded iPod, DVD player and integrated sound system.

It seems that nothing has escaped attention of the management and there are numerous little touches such as scented candles, a Nespresso coffee machine and a weekly drinks party, which add up to a welcoming and luxurious stay. What is more the staff go that extra mile to make sure that every guest feels valued. The Chester Residence is not a budget option but deserves its place in the top 10.

Knight Residence

The 5-star Knight Residence are luxurious serviced apartments, located just a 5-minute walk from the Grassmarket. The Knight Residence was voted the Number 1 Hotel in Europe by Expedia in 2008 and offers luxurious and spacious apartments, from one to three bedrooms, with a separate lounge, dining area and fully equipped kitchen.

The level of personal service is extremely high for a serviced apartment and the staff take the time to show new guests around the apartment and make sure that they are comfortable. Unusually for 5-star accommodation it is also extremely child friendly, with kid's DVD to rent, a free teddy and a complimentary travel toiletry pack for babies. The stylish and luxurious accommodation and the friendly atmosphere pushes the Knight Residence into our top 10.

Prestonfield Hotel

The decadent and quirky 5-star Prestonfield Hotel is located at the foot of Arthur's Seat, a short drive away from the city centre. It is set in 13 acres of private gardens and woodlands where you can find peacocks and Highland cattle on your romantic walks around the gorgeous grounds. There is also a croquet lawn and putting green and even an 18-hole golf course.

For dinner, try award winning restaurant Rhubarb for some real fine dining The rooms are truly dramatic and sexy, decorated in an extremely individual and opulent style, swathed in sensual velvet and silk, some with four poster beds. The Prestonfield is a oasis of calm so close to the city centre, making it easily onto the top 10 list.

Witchery by the Castle

The Witchery by the Castle is 5-star guest accommodation located on Castlehill at the top of the Royal Mile. With just eight gothic-inspired suites with names such as the Armoury and the Inner Sanctum, it is certain that you will not find anything quite like the Witchery, which was described by Harpers and Queen as "almost as famous as the castle itself.".

Indeed, many celebrities have stayed there over the years, including Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones and it is always booked up well in advance. The rooms are quite simply decadent and over the top, decorated in dramatic and opulent fabrics and with roll top baths for two. These dark and theatrical, yet utterly romantic, suites have to be in the top 10.

Missoni Hotel

The fashionable designer 5-star Missoni Hotel is situated on the Royal Mile, right in the centre of Edinburgh. Anyone who is familiar with the Missoni brand will instantly recognise the signature zig zag patterns and vivid colours which are to be found throughout the hotel which is a stunning example of design at its best and boldest.

The rooms are contemporary and very distinctive and again play on the use of bold and dramatic colours and patterns, plus they offer all the modern technology necessary for a comfortable stay such as steam-free mirrors, a speaker system in the bathroom and a Nespresso machine. The Missoni has been home to stars such as Lady Gaga and Snow Patrol and has to be classed as one of the best hotels in Edinburgh.

Tigerlily Hotel

The 4-star hip boutique Tigerlily Hotel is situated in George Street in central Edinburgh. This design driven hotel offers cool and contemporary accommodation and the public areas are modern and glitzy with mosaic mirror tiles and chandeliers, whilst retaining some of the Georgian features from the original building. The thirty three guest rooms and suites are modern and spacious, with mood lighting and pre-loaded iPods - plus hair straighteners for the girls.

There is the Tigerlily Bar, well-known for its cocktails prepared by award-winning mixologists and even a nightclub, Lulu, for which hotel guests receive free priority entry. Tigerlily is a very popular choice for those looking for a luxurious but trendy and lively hotel.

Holyrood Aparthotel

The 4-star Holyrood Aparthotel is located at the east end of the Royal Mile, a quiet area close to Holyrood Palace and Dynamic Earth. This aparthotel is very popular with families or groups travelling together, and also with people are on extended business stays in Edinburgh. The Holyrood Aparthotel offers 2-bedroom apartments with separate lounge, dining area and fully functioning kitchen.

The spacious and contemporary apartments are extremely well equipped, some with food and breakfasts hampers included in the price and make an excellent and reasonably priced alternative to a traditional hotel. Although not as luxurious as most of the hotels in our top 10, we have included it here as it is so popular with previous guests and as it represents such good value for money.

Rutland Hotel

The multi award-winning 4-star boutique Rutland Hotel is a renovated Georgian townhouse, situated just off the west of Princes Street. It is a small hotel, with just 12 guest rooms, all decorated in a stylish and contemporary design with vivid colours and white signature headboards. The staff are friendly and approachable and offer a very high standard of service.

The funky and popular restaurant is the winner of 'The Most Exciting New Restaurant of 2009' award and there is an interactive iBar, The One Below, as well as a trendy cocktail bar Lipgloss. The Rutland stole the show in the 2009 Shoty Awards with ' Best New Scottish Hotel', 'Best Design' and 'Best Bar', yet the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming rather than pretentious, putting it firmly on the list of top 10 hotels in Edinburgh.
